Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a Hackathon? Typically heard in the coding/programming space, a Hackathon is an agile, time-bound event, focused on solving a problem. At BNT, our goal is to hold Hackathon's that can also be used as a tool for learning and breaking down any fear that a participant may have about any widely used technology. Opposed to problem solving for an organization, we aim to help our participants up-skill and become proficient with technology they can expect to use on a job.

Why Linux? The BNT Leadership Team has been in the Technology field for quite some time and one thing that is still fairly common, is the fear of Linux. We have met professionals who may miss out on a dream job due to wanting to avoid their lack of knowledge (and confidence) as it relates to Linux. With the popularity of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) or the growing Cyber Security field, tomorrows professional cannot afford to avoid this Operating System. If you can learn and conquer Linux, you will be well on your way to conquering anything in your technical or non-technical career journey. In addition, the Hackathon will prepare all participants for the Linux Professional Institute's, Linux Essentials certification. Quick disclaimer, the Hackathon alone is not going to be enough to pass the Linux Essentials certification, but a great tool in preparing for the certification, if desired. Visit https://www.lpi.org/our-certifications/linux-essentials-overview/ for more information about this certification and requirements to pass.

Is the Hackathon free? Yes! Aside from BNT being very passionate about helping grow the next group of professionals, we seek to make the most feared technology something that you will not only love and use across your technology journey, but also prepare you for a tool that will undoubtedly come up as you seek roles in Technology. The days of skipping out on something as unique and special as Linux, are in the past. The professionals who are comfortable with Linux are continuously being sought after. Some of the largest companies rely on Linux in some fashion and if we can help out in this endeavor, we will.

Why is a Personal Laptop required? To ensure all participants can actively participate with as minimal requirements (aside from showing up) we opted to use technology that participants may already possess. In this Hackathon, we will utilize Virtualization.

What is Virtualization? Virtualization is technology that you can use to create virtual representations of servers, storage, networks, and other physical machines. This technology is commonly used in most enterprises, ranging from a single end user's device up to a fleet of devices that serve a specific purpose. Virtualization provides the ability to interact with any hardware resource with much greater flexibility than a 1:1 hardware device.

What if I am not "technical" or just don't feel equipped for a Hackathon? Ready for a pep talk? No doubting yourself or coming in defeated! This Hackathon is exactly for those who may have some nervousness or "think" they cannot learn something as technical as Linux. We have been there before and are here to help you grow! Every part of the Hackathon will work in a controlled environment and there is absolutely nothing that can be broken that is not easily fixable during the event. Our challenge to all participants is to get ready to dive in and learn something new. Prepare yourself to be great!

What if I still have questions or need assistance? Not to worry! We have you covered. Please reach out to us via our e-mail address, hello@blvckintech.org, or via any of our social media accounts. We are here to help and will be with you every step of the way!
